Tina’s Pretty Things: The Leftover Fruit Board

Tina’s Pretty Things: The Leftover Fruit Board

I had one of those end-of-the-week fridge moments today—the kind where you open the drawer and realize the fruit is this close to becoming compost… or becoming something.

So instead of tossing it, I made a tiny backyard “charcuterie” board for the birds.

Nothing fancy. Just:

  • Orange slices

  • Grapes (cut up first!) — because whole grapes can be a choking hazard for birds

  • A sprinkle of sunflower seeds

  • A few peanuts

  • And a little bowl of water right in the front-center like I’m running a five-star patio café

Honestly? It made me ridiculously happy.

Why I feed the birds on cold winter days

Winter can be tough on birds. Food sources get scarce, and when it’s cold, they burn a lot of energy just staying warm. I’m not trying to “save the ecosystem” in a dramatic way—I just like helping out when the days are harsh and the ground is stingy.

Plus, it’s a really simple way to turn leftovers into something useful.

My real agenda: I want crow friends

Let me say this clearly: I’m hoping to befriend the crows.

I’ve heard enough stories about people who leave little treats and eventually the crows start showing up like clockwork… and sometimes (sometimes!) they bring little trinkets. A shiny button, a random bead, something mysterious they found and decided was a fair trade for peanuts.

Do I know if that’ll happen? No.
Do I want it to happen? Absolutely.

Plot twist: the squirrels got there first

But here’s the thing about putting out a cute little bird spread…

The squirrels run this neighborhood like they pay taxes.

I set everything out, stepped back feeling like some kind of woodland hostess, and within no time the squirrels rolled in like, “Oh wow, thanks, Tina. For us.”

So my crow dreams did not come true today. Not yet.

Still… this is why I love Nature Stalker days

Even with the squirrel heist, I love doing stuff like this. It gets me up, moving, paying attention. It’s a small ritual that turns “leftover fruit” into “look at all these pretty things happening in my yard.”

And that’s kind of the whole point of Nature Stalker for me—finding small reasons to step outside, notice life, and make the ordinary feel a little more fun.

I’ll try again soon. The crows will come.
And when they do… I’ll be ready with peanuts and high expectations. 🖤

Quick note: If you do grapes, always cut them up small first for bird safety.
